One of last year’s LPBC Civic Engagement Projects addressed the issue of keeping teen mothers in school. “Caps & Cribs” launched as a mentoring program through the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies (HMHB) Coalition of Palm Beach County – and it’s already changed the lives of several teen mothers. The program is expanding across Palm Beach County, with the goal of keeping many more teen mothers on a path toward success instead of on a road to poverty.

We asked Michelle Gonzalez (Class of 2011 and a co-chair of Marketing Committee), who is HMHB’s director of external affairs, to describe the “Caps and Cribs” project and how we all can support it.

1) Briefly describe the civic engagement project.

Michelle Gonzalez: Caps & Cribs is a mentoring program for teen mothers in Palm Beach County. The goal of the project is to match working mothers with local teens who are pregnant or parenting and help guide them to not only complete high school, but empower them to be positive parents and develop life goals that encourage further education and career plans.

2) What did the project accomplish?

Michelle Gonzalez: Since its inception in May 2014, we have matched eight mentors with mentees. Of those, one graduated and is now in nursing school at Palm Beach State College, one is on track to graduate in May and is currently exploring program and financial aid opportunities also at Palm Beach State College. Both of these teens have been mentored by LPBC alumni from the Class of 2014!

3) Is work from the project still impacting our community? If yes, how so?

Michelle Gonzalez: Yes. The program launched as a pilot in just two high schools, but is growing quickly. Our long-term goal is to expand and ensure that every high school teen mother in Palm Beach County is matched with a mentor. LPBC alumni can get involved and become mentors by contacting me directly or by visiting our website at http://www.hmhbpbc.org/mentor.One of last year’s LPBC Civic Engagement Projects addressed the issue of keeping teen mothers in school. “Caps & Cribs” launched as a mentoring program through the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies (HMHB) Coalition of Palm Beach County – and it’s already changed the lives of several teen mothers.
