Why did we organize our recent Alumni Family Day at South Florida Fair? For one thing, it was to have fun at the fair and to help the Lewis Center and Pat Reeves Villages get much-needed underwear to the homeless of Palm Beach County. But there were other reasons, too. We also want to support vital local organizations, including the Fair.
LPBC alumni Vicki Chouris, Class of 2010 and the Fair’s Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, explains the Fair’s impact on our economy.
What is the importance of South Florida Fair to the economy of Palm Beach County?
Vicki: The South Florida Fair has a very significant impact on the economy of Palm Beach County both during the Fair event and on an annual basis. Over half a million people, both residents and visitors to the area, attend the annual 17-day Fair. The Fair employs 50 people year-round and that number grows to over 300 during the Fair. Over 200 vendors at the Fair stay in area hotels, eat in local restaurants, shop at our retail locations and buy gasoline and other merchandise during their stay. This same type of economic activity occurs throughout the year during the 100+ shows held at the Fairgrounds annually.
In addition to economics, why else is South Florida Fair a vital part of our community?
Vicki: The South Florida Fair enhances the quality of life for the people of Palm Beach County by offering a great family experience. We also support our community by providing scholarships to area students, giving area business a place to showcase their business. Although the Fair is a non-profit organization, we support numerous other non-profit organizations through partnerships and promotions. The Fair management staff is very active in our community as is the volunteer Board of Trustees and Directors.
How can the LPBC current classes and alumni support South Florida Fair?
Vicki: Volunteer! The South Florida Fair is very dependent on volunteers. During 2014, over 53,000 volunteer hours were recorded through the assistance of over 1000 volunteers.
