The recently completed 2015 Focus program taught many participants that Palm Beach County is a leader in many sectors -- including education (our school district is one of the biggest and best in the nation)! Participant Elizabeth Portmess, development coordinator at Quantum House in West Palm Beach, learned a lot more: importance of connecting with other leaders to better serve our community.

She explains how her experience in Focus impacted her community involvement and professional development:

1) What’s the most important thing you learned during Focus about Palm Beach County?

Elizabeth Portmess: The Focus program opened my eyes to how Palm Beach County fits into the bigger picture. It is an important asset to not only the state of Florida, but also the country as we are the leader in many different areas. Our school system is a great example; it is generally thought of as lacking however the Palm Beach County

School Distri

ct is one of the biggest and best in the nation. A majority of the speakers ended their talks with statements of their appreciation and admiration for the county and the 2015 Focus class would agree!

2) Did Focus inspire you to get more involved in your community? If so, how will you be involved?

Elizabeth Portmess: My situation is unique because I currently work for Quantum House, a local nonprofit, so I saw the reverse of this question. My classmates approached me with questions about the House and how they could get involved. It was amazing how strongly everyone felt the urge to make a difference after only a few short days. Needless to say everyone left motivated with ideas and ways they could positively impact their community.

3) How did your experience at Focus impact your professional development?

Elizabeth Portmess: The topics covered during Focus did a great job of highlighting how different organizations and business collaborate for the benefit and betterment of the community. It encouraged me to reach out to community partners, new and old, to grow Quantum House so we can better serve Palm Beach County.
